Construction Fatality Occurs at UH Athletics Complex

A man was killed at a construction site on O´ahu Thursday night, July 29.

The incident occurred during work at the Clarence TC Ching Athletics Complex to construct a hospitality suite, according to information provided by the University of Hawai´i.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” UH said in a statement released Friday afternoon. “The University of Hawaiʻi offers its deepest condolences to the family, friends and coworkers of the victim. We stand with you in your grief. UH is committed to doing everything we can to assist in the investigation of this devastating event.”

The Honolulu Police Department told Hawai´i News Now that the incident took place at approximately 7:30 pm. Thursday evening. The victim, a 30-year-old foreign national employed by a German company, was reportedly unloading a Matson container at the time of his death.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway. It is being conducted by the State Occupational Safety and Health Division, in conjunction with the University of Hawai´i.

HNN went on to report that the UH Athletics Department fast-tracked the construction at the site in December of last year after Aloha Stadium was closed down. According to that report, project cost was estimated at $8.3 million. It is currently unclear what impact the fatal incident will have on the site construction schedule.
