The National Weather Service (NWS) said there is no projected tsunami threat to the state of Hawai´i following an earthquake on the Big Island Thursday afternoon, June 17, 2021.
Initially reported by the United States Geological Service as a magnitude-4.1, the quake occurred approximately eight miles ENE of Pāhala in the southwest rift zone of the Kīlauea Volcano at a depth of roughly 32.5 kilometers. It struck at 4:32 pm.
Two minutes later, the NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach said the earthquake, which it initally listed as a magnitude-4.3, was not expected to cause a tsunami.
