Salt Pond Beach in Hanapēpē is closed to swimming until further notice due to a shark sighting.

According to Ocean Safety Bureau officials on Thursday, May 20, a possible 8-to-10-foot shark was sighted by the east end of the beach. As a safety precaution, Ocean Safety officials advise no swimming until further notice, and signs have been posted to warn beachgoers of the shark sighting.

Lifeguards will reassess the area on Friday, May 21, to determine if the beach can be reopened. Updates will be provided when more information becomes available.
For updates, speak to a county lifeguard or call the Ocean Safety Bureau at 808-241-4984.
