Special Marine Warning Issued for Leeward Waters

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a special marine warning for leeward waters until 9:30 a.m.

At 7:37 a.m., an area of strong thunderstorms from 40 nm south of Ni‘ihau to near Kekaha was nearly stationary. These thunderstorms were capable of producing wind gust of 34 knots or higher and waterspouts.

Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas. Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves.

Locations impacted include Lehua Rock, FAD Buoy KK, FAD Buoy PP, FAD Buoy AA and Southern Tip of Ni‘ihau.

Thunderstorms can produce sudden waterspouts. Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas. Seek safe harbor immediately.
