Hiker Rescued off Nounou-East Trail

Firefighters rescued a 31-year-old male hiker on the Nounou-East Trail, also known as Sleeping Giant, in Wailua on Monday, Dec. 7.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were notified at approximately 6:10 p.m. of a lost hiker on Sunday, Dec. 6. According to a preliminary report, the hiker could not locate the trail due to the darkness and steep terrain. KFD officials advised the hiker to shelter in place, as first responders would resume rescue efforts the following morning.

Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 spotted the hiker on a ridge at approximately 8:10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 7. First responders extracted the hiker via Air Rescue Vest (ARV) with a short-haul line and airlifted him to Wailua Houselots Park.

The hiker refused medical treatment by awaiting fire personnel and was later picked up via private vehicle.

Firefighter personnel cleared the scene at approximately 9:10 a.m.
