Hit-and-Run Driver Injuries Cyclist on Kūhiō Highway
Kauaʽi Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a driver that fled the scene after striking a cyclist Sunday night in Keālia.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:20 p.m. According to a preliminary report, a Kapaʽa man was bicycling north along Kūhiō Highway in front of the Kaiakea Fire Station when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle that was traveling in the same direction.
Witnesses said that the bicyclist moved onto the northbound lane from the shoulder when he was struck by the vehicle.
“The driver subsequently continued traveling north without stopping,” police report.
The bicyclist was initially transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in critical condition, but his injuries were later determined to be non-life threatening. He remains at the hospital.
Kūhiō Highway was closed in both directions for approximately one hour while an investigation was conducted. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information regarding the incident is asked to call Officer Shawn Hanna of the Kauaʽi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit at 808-241-1615.
