The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, known as CALEA, will be conducting an assessment of the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) as part of a re-accreditation process.

CALEA assessors will be examining all aspects of the police department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services.

The team’s verification that KPD meets the commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain re-accreditation—a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence.

As part of the assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments by calling 808-241-1935 between 8 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on June 29, and leaving a voicemail to include name, contact information and a brief comment. Assessors will return all voicemails to address any comments.

In addition, KPD invites the public to an Informational Session, which will be held from 1- 2:30 p.m. on June 29. Due to Covid-19 restrictions the Informational Session will be conducted via Microsoft Teams. Members of the public who wish to testify need to ensure that this program is downloaded prior to the session and must also make a request to KPD at least one hour prior to the meeting.

These requests can be made to the Office of Professional Standards via email at kpdchiefsoffice@kauai.gov or via phone by calling 808-241-1935. The request will need to include your name, telephone number, e-mail address and specific topic of testimony.

All telephone comments and public information comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.
