From what I've seen, most coaches have more out-of-bounds plays in basketball legends their playbooks than their players can possibly understand and execute well. There just aren't enough games in a coach's career to play every one of our favorite ones! And if players aren't able to run any of the dozens of out-of-bounds plays you teach them for every conceivable scenario, then teaching them is pointless.

Keeping things simple means coming up with a handful of plays that can be used in a variety of contexts and play to the team's strengths. Then, it's crucial that the coach effectively teaches such plays and that the players quickly and easily learn to analyze defenses and execute them under pressure. When it came to inbounds plays under the hoop and on the sidelines, I mainly used two alignments. At any level of competitiveness, though, you'll have enough variation thanks to the various options and the player's initiative to break patterns when they recognize opportunities.
