California visitor dies while swimming in waters off Tunnels Beach on Kauaʻi
On Friday night, a male visitor died while swimming in waters off Tunnels Beach in Hāʻena, according to the Kauaʻi Police Department.
The man has been identified as Lucas Ivor, 37, of California. He was visiting Kaua’i with his family.
At approximately 5:15 p.m. on June 9, Medic 22 and Station 1 were dispatched to a report of a swimmer face down in the water. A beachgoer had seen the man waving for help in the water and swam out to him.
The swimmer was unresponsive by the time he arrived. Bystanders pulled the man to the shore and performed CPR until responding firefighters and medics took over lifesaving efforts.
Medics transported Ivor to Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital. Attempts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful.
Volunteers from Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, assisted the man’s family.
“This is a tragic event, and the department sends condolences to the entire family,” said Acting Assistant Chief Kennison Nagahisa of the Kaua’i Police Investigative Services Bureau. “We would like to thank the courageous men and women who assisted with lifesaving efforts.”
